Colonel Blashford-Snell and the Double-Nosed Andean Tiger Hound

I'm not making it up. That's Col. B-S over there on the right.

The explorers also carried with them a church organ from Dorset as a gift to local Bolivians in order to secure their help with finding the meteorite.

Via.

Update

As I was noisily rattling around the house last night with nothing to read, the girlfriend handed me an omnibus edition of Conan Doyle's Professor Challenger novels to shut me up. Well, I'm enjoying the hell out of it, and it reminded me of this character. Hence, more Blashfordsnelliana for the faithful:

Col J. B-S. in the Telegraph.

He's got a web site, naturally.

My god, I didn't know there was anyone like that left. Can we have our empire back now please? Or I shall set Colonel Bashford-Snell upon you.

yeh u can havit back. an welcome to it.

Perhaps the telling clue as to why they would be toting an organ about the jungle was in this bit:

He said: "While we were there, sitting by the fire one night, I saw an extraordinary-looking dog that appeared to have two noses.

"I was sober at the time, and then I remembered the story that the legendary explorer Colonel Percy Fawcett came back with in 1913 of seeing such strange dogs in the Amazon jungle."

Perhaps he was not sober at the time they set out with the organ, eh?
